What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the part of your eye that sends visual signals to your brain. This damage is usually caused by increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) due to fluid buildup.

Over time, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss, starting with your peripheral (side) vision and eventually impacting your central vision if left untreated.

Common Risk Factors:

Age (especially over 60)
Family history of glaucoma
Diabetes or high blood pressure
African American, Hispanic, or Asian heritage
Past eye injury or surgery
Long-term use of steroid medications

Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, which is why regular eye exams are so important.

What You Might Notice (in later stages):

Loss of side vision
Difficulty seeing at night
Blurry vision or tunnel vision
Halos around lights

Because symptoms usually don’t appear until significant damage has occurred, early detection is critical.

How We Treat Glaucoma

At Eyesight Medical Center, we offer a variety of safe, effective treatments that help lower eye pressure and protect your vision for the long term.

Medical Management (Prescription Eye Drops)

We often start treatment with prescription eye drops to reduce pressure. Some patients may stay on drops long-term, while others may later switch to laser or MIGS if needed.

Convenient daily use
Wide variety of drop types based on your needs

SLT  (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty)

A gentle, in-office laser procedure that improves the drainage of fluid from your eye—lowering pressure without surgery. It’s quick, painless, and often used as a first-line or follow-up treatment to medications.

No incisions, stitches, or downtime
Can reduce or eliminate the need for eye drops
Typically covered by insurance

MIGS  (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery)

For patients who need more than medication or laser, MIGS procedures offer powerful pressure-lowering benefits with a much faster recovery than traditional glaucoma surgery. These procedures are often done during cataract surgery.

Less invasive than traditional glaucoma surgery
Lower risk and quicker healing
May reduce or eliminate dependence on eye drops
